Australian teens are not strong supporters of tougher environmental laws and
most are not concerned about problems such as energy shortages, species
extinction and forest clearing.
The findings from an international survey of 15-year-old students punch a
hole through the popular belief that the young care deeply about green
issues.
Less than half of the Australian students see species extinction, energy
shortages, forest clearing or nuclear waste as something to worry about.
Only the drought seems to have had an impact on their environmental
attitudes, with about seven in 10 students seeing water shortages as a
serious personal issue.
The level of personal concern from teens about environmental issues is among
the lowest of all the countries surveyed. Australia ranked third last for
concerns about nuclear waste, fourth last for air pollution and sixth from
the bottom for species extinction.
