What happens when a major company like Ford goes bankrupt? Do the
stocks then become worthless, and drop right off the ticker tape--or
what?

F will become FORDQ, it will move to the pink sheets or grey market, rise
100% then die a slow death cause it is virtually worthless. In the best case
the common shareholders get 1% of the new
lot -if-they-can-find-money-to-move-on.
