For me, the status of Holy is occupied by Natural Rights...I cannot
violate your rights without losing all sense of who I am and what I
value. That's one hellaciously effective protection of your rights.
But the damnable thing about who I am and what I believe is that I'm
going to largely leave you alone with political misconceptions like
the police protect us and you can change things through voting as
though a mark on a piece of paper changes anything. Alas, unlike the
Jehovah's Witnesses who plague my front door, I'm not going to
interrupt your life at my convenience with a knock and the question
"Have you accepted Natural Rights into your heart?" I'll write
articles and argue 'til my throat is raw -- just try to stop me! --
but I will not do what the State and other authoritarian consider
their stock in trade: knock on your door without your permission.
More's the pity. Perhaps you need such a knock.
Because the United States is becoming a totalitarian state on the
level of the Soviet Union in its statist heydays or Nazi
Germany...pick your poisonous analogy of choice. In each analogous
case, the utter crushing of freedom was actively facilitated by the co-
operation of so-called decent people who 'went along' with each and
every abrogation of liberty without comment or protest. Indeed, they
often co-operated far beyond what was necessitated by law. For
example...you need to vote this year? You will be imprisoned if you do
not?
Ask yourself: how do I obey the State...and do I need to do so? Break
down your specific acts of obedience and question each one of them:
make them answer the question "do I need to obey?" There are the
obvious instances of coerced obedience that are prompted by the gun to
your head. Paying taxes, for example. The State declares: pay up or be
financially ruined and perhaps imprisoned. So...okay, I get that. I
understand why you pay up just as you would pay a thug with a gun in
an alley. I can't find it in my heart ot condemn anyone who pays a
thug in order to escape violence.
Then there are the grey areas. Do you need to apply for government
benefits or work a government job that (as a libertarian) you know is
paid with stolen money? Do you have to be one of the loot-raking
thugs? And, yes, this question is directed at every so-called
libertarian professor who works at a state-funded university. How can
you look yourself in the mirror while skimming the cream of stolen
goods that you yourself denounce as immoral? I can find it in my heart
to fully and roundly denounce anyone who knowingly accepts stolen
property for the sole purpose of enhancing their career. One so-called
libertarian I know says that he cannot work in physics without getting
on the public dole (which he receives twice as both a grant recipient
and a prof.)...and physics is his passion -- so what choice does he
have? The same choice of decency or not that all of us confront! Damn
his soul for calling himself a libertarian. Whatever he claims to
believe, his actions say that it is just fine in his world for his
passion to be funded by money taken out of the mouths of taxpayers'
children.
Then there is co-operation with the state that is absolutely voluntary
-- that is, it has no negative consequences at all -- and, so, it is
absolutely despicable. I've already mentioned voting as one example.
But how about filling out applications for state funds that you really
don't need but would benefit from ? How about using the court system?
How about answering questions for the police? For the love of God...or
whatever you value...just don't do it. DON'T DO IT.
I'm done with this rant. Please don't be done with decency. Please
don't abandon society to the beasts that are the state.
