Subject: Greenie question: Coating the edge of a CD with a green permanent marker will improve the sound quality. True or False?
From: B J Foster <b...@y...com.invalid> Search message by this author

YOU ARE CORRECT! The correct answer is FALSE. This urban legend can be
traced back to 1989, when compact discs were first becoming popular.
Initially, the claim was very specific about the type of marker required
-- Eberhard Faber Design Art Marker No. 255 -- but gradually evolved to
include any green permanent marker, and then a variety of different
colors. There was also some variation in what part of the CD should be
colored -- inner rim or outer rim.

The only thing that never changed was the lack of any scientific proof
that it actually worked.

Subject: Greenie question: 'Greenhouse' gases are causing the earth's temperature to spike out of control. True or False?
From: B J Foster <b...@y...com.invalid> Search message by this author

YOU ARE CORRECT! The correct answer is FALSE. This urban legend can be
traced back to a failed presidential candidate, Al Gore, who stands to
earn huge commissions from carbon trading.

Initially, the claim was very quite specific that global warming was
caused by "greenhouse gases" such as CO2. Now the claim has morphed into
a (much more defensible) "emissions" problem as the quacks prepare to
manage the inevitable fallout which will occur when people discover that
they have been duped into paying for a distraction.

In practice, the earth's atmosphere *is* a greenhouse. Were it not so,
the earth would be frozen and we would be unable to live on it.

Nice try, but the green marker was dismissed as a silly little joke by the
scientific community and the enlightened. But taken very seriously by the
simple minded, uneducated wishful thinkers. This is in complete contrast
with CO2 global warming.

I think without the atmosphere, greenhouse effect would be the least of our
problems! ie we couldnt breath, would get fried from UV radiation... As for
the temperature, the greenhouse effect keeps us a little warmer and smooths
out the extremes. At the correct levels to maintain life as we know it.
Which demonstrates just how incredibly valuable our atmosphere is. The last
thing we can afford to do is screw it up even a little bit. Scientists tell
us that CO2 is capable of doing just that.

Actually, I don't believe Al Gore invented climate change. That's a bit
of a myth.

And if he had, I'd want to know how he got at least 80% of scientists in
the US, and every reputable scientific organisation, to play along with
the scam.

I don't believe that professional scientists form their opinions watching
vids. I don't doubt that some people do (e.g, people who watch glenn
beck), but I think you'll find that most scientists are trained to
examine the data.

Or are you going to suggest that there's some subliminal message in the
movie that people absorb subconsciously?

Of course you don't.

The whole thing is driven by politics.

What do you mean by scientists? Administrator's lobbying for funding or
men in white coats? No-one (principled, that is) is going to turn down
the massive windfall resulting for Gore's hype. The more principled ones
will take the money and rationalise that it will improve climate research.

Nope. The movie is a hard sell. It's also misleading and rubbish.

Nope.

I support research into climatology but I have a problem with my taxes
being taken under false pretences.

It's worth watching just to see how convincing it is.
