Warmenists just want to hurt for the sake of hurting

July 6 2008

Australian politicians are becoming more vocal on how futile and
destructive is a local response to feared global warming:

Australian efforts to cut greenhouse emissions will be cancelled out by
China, where emissions are tipped to grow by more than 10 per cent a
year, NSW Nationals leader Andrew Stoner has said ...

"Hard-working Australians shouldn't cop it in the neck on climate change
if other countries aren't subject to the same rules," Mr Stoner said.

"Even if Australia stopped producing carbon altogether, China alone
would produce more emissions than what we would save, within just nine
months."

As The Australian's Alan Wood writes:

Australia ... is effectively irrelevant.

There can be no significant progress on limiting carbon emissions
without substantial action by India and China, and that looks to be at
least a decade away, possibly more. If Australia moves ahead of the rest
of the world to curb carbon emissions, there will be no benefit to
Australia or the world but a potentially very high cost to us, involving
extensive restructuring and transfers of wealth within Australia and
from Australia to emerging economies.

UPDATE. Jeremy in comments:

The Australian [carbon-output] average per person IS NEARLY SEVEN TIMES
THE GLOBAL AVERAGE.

Yes. YES IT IS. And we could double our average and still be a
statistically-insignificant contributor to alleged warming.

I'm sure we'll have great success waiting for developing countries to
act first.

Although we're each polluting seven times more than you, would you mind
taking seriously our request to cut your emissions to an even lower
ration of ours - because there are so many of you, see? - whilst we do
nothing?

Well, let's imagine what might be the reaction from India and China if
we do accomplish massive cuts, pointlessly, and at gigantic expense.

Ever heard two billion people laughing, Jeremy?

We could always experiment, though, by presenting Jeremy's personal
carbon-reduction efforts as an example to the world-and to other
Australians, for that matter.

Tell us all about your sacrifices, Jeremy.

You might inspire someone in Pingyao!!!!!!!!!
