Subject: Income stocks.. Opinions on KMP 8%, NLY16%, PWE 25%, BTE 18%
From: -=DirtBagŠ <D...@d...net> Search message by this author

I am thinking a mix of income stocks..
Trying to put together a short list for a mix of some sort.
I am new to income stocks so any advice or rational opinions
are appreciated.

NLY 16% seems to be as solid as they get but in a
unfavorable area.. Mortgages. ( high quality though)

KMP 8% Seems solid.

PWE 25% risky??

BTE 18% ??

GE 8% with maybe a 1/3 more in stock price.. Not sure how
to compute that into this..

Like I mentioned. I am new to this safer type investing.. I
used to think dividends were for old people on fixed
incomes. I kind of like this idea now.. But need to learn
more and understand the associated issues etc. so maybe
others can learn a bit too or contribute to the tread.

I know some of you are older and likely more =focused= on
income investments. I hope you participate. Several of you
discuss income stocks

I guess 'basket funds' that do this are a safe way to go as
well. I would be interested in them as well REITs too.
But mainly looking for that mix of 'safe and secure' as it
would be long term . I am courious what could be considered
a reasonable 'Safe" return. I am thinking 8-12% is a
reasonable expectation for safe investments.. But like I
said, I am trying to learn, and figure this new area out so
your experience, opinions, and reasonings are most welcome..

Thanks to all...

Jim, check out the closed end bond funds selling at 20-30% discount from NAV.
Check out www.etfconnect.com

Click on "Find a Fund" Then click the "Closed End ETFs" drop-down and click on
the item "Fixed Income - General Bond"

Today, I counted six funds with discounts > 20%

One reason for this is that the bond market is in shambles......
Very few sizable bond positions could be liquidated anywhere near the
nominal quotes that are being thrown around........

BOT Black Rock BHD today. Got a 19% discount on a 11.7% coupon. It's largest
holdings are Verizon and Lockheed Martin. Generally speaking, as a closed end
fund, the need to cash out the positions is rather nil. But a yield over eleven
percent is good, right?

In www.etfconnect.com also click on "Corporate Bond" and "Government" because
there are decent discounts all over the place.

why don't you try "drips" =dividend re-investment stocks? you can
selecta mix of defensive stocks like; trst,jci,adm,mgee,apd,wmi....if
you don't need the income from the stocks right now, you can re-ivest
the dividends to buy more shares...and nowdays, with the internet, you
can sell these stocks almost immediatly if one f them has a problem..you
can buy most of them directly through the copany,or you can open an
account at "sharebuilder"....i send payments into sharebuilder ,nothing
structured, just when i feel lke it, and build up my cash account which
pays a small interest rate, when i get enough for what i want i make one
purchase. that way it costs you only 5 bucks instead of 5 bucks
everytime you send cash in a pre-planned stock buy. good luck...

DISOBEY !

Hey, nothing wrong with DRIPs. Our pension trust once had twenty of them!

Now, DRIPs have become expensive with all kinds of fees attached to them. For
most DRIPs it works out to about $6 per optional stock purchase. It's a lot
cheaper just to buy the stock paying a $1 commission at IB. If I want the
dividends reinvested, I could -- at no charge -- have the stock electronically
transferred to either the DRIP custodian or to our account at Muriel Siebert &
Co. which will reinvest the dividends at no charge.

As a pension trust, DRIPs, when they're free, work out great because the pension
fund does not pay any tax but has to fill out a form 5500 which is not too
difficult. But for individuals DRIPs can be PAINFUL. When you sell you stock
you have to go back to all those reinvested dividends to calculate your cost
basis. And if you do a partial unload, you have to determine which reinvested
shares were sold. All that bookkeeping, Mr. Comics, is the definition of one
big old headache.

Yesterday I had a position marked down 20 points because there was a
trade of 5 bonds at 27% of face value.....a transaction of little more than
$1250.....
On top of that, many closed end funds are leveraged. The freak losses
like that get magnified by leverage. That is a good reason to discount them
deeply.

that it is not so bad.but many of the companies now do all that for
you...bob evans, mgee, adm, jci they just send you a statement with all the
info on it......computers are a fantastic invention !

It's no more in shambles than the stock market. No sizable anything
can be liquidated without affecting the price. That's why hedge fund
and pension fund dumping is causing so much volatility. But, I'm not
sure why this matters, since you wouldn't buy a fund that is about to
liquidate anyway. To Dirt Bag's list, I would add

DDT
CMO
PNNT
...and these closed-end funds...
JGT
GDL
HYB
JQC
ESD
JSN
HQL

I own all these with real money (as well as PWE).

On the other hand my 11+% dividend, using the rule of 72, means I double my
money after 7 years. In this economy, that's very good, IMO.
