One of our regulars (Elle) is having trouble posting to mifp. She can
read current posts but not respond.
Her posts are not being blocked by the moderators or the auto-reject
posting software. Simply put: Her machine cannot connect to mifp for
posting purposes.
Since she recently changed ISPs, my suggestion to her was to contact
the new ISP and ask how to set up USENET and then redo the set up.
If anyone has other suggestions for her, please post them on this
thread.
Thank you.

With moderated newsgroups, the postings are actually e-mailed
to the moderator, not posted. She may have forgotten to change
the outbound E-mail server hostname, username, or password when
she moved to the new ISP. The other possibility is that the
new ISP has the newsgroup configured with the wrong E-mail address
for the moderator.

Post using Google:
http://groups.google.com/group/misc.invest.financial
-plan/topics
Downsides: requires a Google ID; no local archive of posts (an important
issue for those in the business who may need to keep copies for
regulatory purposes).

The only way I see this forum is thru google groups and I have not had
any issues. A google group allows me to flag interesting threads so I
can quickly see them, and also gives various viewing options to see
threads displayed certain ways- for example can collapse posts I have
read.

Someone at the new ISP should be able to fix. The new ISP probably
assigns all kinds of new numbers (such as IP or Internet Protocol
address that AFAIK identifies the computer). It may be that Google
retains group membership info, and when that doesn't match with the IP
number, all traffic gets tossed into the void of cyberspace.
No solution here, just some guesses that a geek at the ISP would want
to know:
Try posting to other groups to see if it is a problem with non-
moderated as well
Apply to another moderated group, and see if that gets blocked
Check the IE settings for 'security settings' and 'newsgroups' to be
sure 'usenet' is enabled
Check that she can e-mail without problems

The route above is working much better than when I tried it a few
times a few years ago. Thanks, Tad.
For reference: I switched to the new ISP (Cox) back around February;
it was working fine for posting to moderated groups up until a few
weeks ago. I can post to Unmoderated newsgroups without problem. My
cox email (the same one I have been using to post here) works fine for
email purposes. I have removed my newsgroup account and re-set it a
few times since I first started having this problem. No luck. I tried
posting to misc.test.moderated (which supposedly helps narrow down the
problem for someone in my straits), and my submission did not post.
Today at a Cox help newsgroup, I asked if someone else with Cox could
submit a message to misc.test.moderated. Someone said he did. His
submission has not appeared. I have consulted Cox by chat, email and
phone, including its newsmaster, and so far, no one at Cox has any
response that helps. OTOH when I got a live person at Cox Support, I
was a bit underwhelmed when the guy said he did not know what a
newsgroup was and I had to explain moderated and unmoderated, etc. He
couldn't even try posting from where he was to misc.test.moderated.
Patience may be key.
If I ever get this resolved, I will post back. Thanks also to John,
jIM, and Dobbs for the suggestions, and to Skip for patience. They at
least tended to confirm I have been heading down the right diagnostic
path.

The problem was indeed with my Internet Service Provider,
Cox Communications. Cox subcontracts its newsgroup
management to one "Highwinds Media Group." The newsmaster
posted at cox.internet.discussion.newsgroups today (Aug. 15)
in response to my query of August 7. The newsmaster said
simply that Highwinds fixed the moderated newsgroup problem
and asked me to post to some moderated groups via Cox to see
if the problem was truly fixed. It is. Should any other Cox
Communications user have problems, I would suggest both
emailing n...@c...net and posting to the
aforementioned Cox discussion newsgroup.

Interesting, I too have Cox and have had no problems over the last few
months. But thanks for the Help site.

Interesting. I wonder if it has to do with different servers at
different locations, or if had to do with a necessary software update?
