Hi all, I need some advice.
I just got a letter from a debt collection company saying that I owe
the Viriginia dept of taxation money for taxes unpaid for 2005. The
letter is dated Sept 25th but I only received it on Nov 8th.
I looked up my records and found that I paid my taxes and owe them
nothing.
I tried to tell them this but they insist that I need to pay them
immediately or they'll begin collection proceedings against me. I
offered to fax them the documents but they want the money NOW.
I don't see why I should pay when I don't owe them anything. I
requested for more time so that I can send them the docs and the
matter can be amicably resolved but they just are not ready to wait.
If I refuse to pay and they initiate collection proceedings against
me, I'm afraid it might hurt my credit.
How do I resolve this?

Have you contacted the State of Virginia? This may (or may not) be a scam. I
would want corroboration from the state before I sent any money anywhere.

I think you should ask THEM to send YOU the documentation that proves you
owe the money. Anyone can claim you owe them money -- if you don't agree,
there's no reason you should have to prove it to them until they've given
you evidence that they're not just making things up.

First determine whether this call was on the level or a scam. To
proceed, call your State Department of Revenue and ask to speak to an
agent about your tax bill.
Ask him/her if there is any balance due. If there is, ask for
documentation. If there isn't, report the call to the agent and
forget it.
Let us know what you find out.

That is good advice - make sure the creditor has the legal right
to enforce the debt - a copy of the judgment, bill, etc.
If they provide that, you might want to pay it.
If they don't provide it, you might not want to pay it.
