Personal auto imports up as US car prices drop

Personal imports of cars are flourishing even as the Israeli vehicle
market stagnates. Figures obtained by Globes indicate that the
increase in personal car imports grew in August-October, when the low
number of workdays in the period is discounted.
Personal imports of US cars stayed strong, and were joined by massive
personal imports of luxury European cars. Imports were helped by the
weakness of the euro and the drop in luxury car sales on the continent
because of soaring fuel prices and the economic crisis.
In January-October, personal car imports reportedly increased by 100%
over the corresponding period in 2007, compared with 24% growth in
imports by regular car dealers. An industry source told Globes. The US
car market is in the throes of a severe slump and many cars are being
sold at almost any price. The financial situation of dealers is
desperate. Prices of US cars in Israel have been affected by the fall
in dollar denominated prices offset by the rise in the shekel-dollar
exchange rate.

said, Personal imports is becoming an alternative for wealthy who are
forced to seek cheaper alternatives for luxury cars.
