Stocks back in reverse on slowdown fears as Asian markets climb

THE sharemarket closed lower as investors fretted over signs of an
economic slowdown and were spooked by GPT Group's profit downgrade.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 79.6 points, or 1.6%, to 5002.5,
erasing the gains made in Friday's rally.
Ord Minnett private client adviser Jon Hancock said stocks in
resources, asset management, property and infrastructure led the
market down. "It's hard to find anywhere where there was a gain," he
said.
Mr Hancock said there were several factors behind the market's fall,
including no lead from US markets, which were closed for the 4th of
July holiday on Friday, and ANZ's monthly survey showing a fall in job
advertisements.
Other negatives were slides in oil and gold, both connected to a
strengthening in the US dollar. The same factors were positives for
Asian markets, with the Nikkei 225 Index up 0.9%, the Hang Seng up
2.3% and the Shanghai Composite up 4.6%. European markets were also
stronger as well in early trading.
